IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT DRIVING & VIEWING

  1. The following is a one to two hour self-guided tour that departs from the Civic Center, makes a large loop around the city and returns to the Civic Center
  2. It is recommended that your navigator brings a Scottsdale city map to supplement the driving instructions
  3. Artwork title and location follows the driving instructions
  4. Many artworks must be visited on foot only
  5. Some artworks are designed for the drive-by experience & drivers and passengers will safely and easily view the artwork from the window of a moving vehicle. These artworks are denoted by *
  6. Many artworks are visible from a vehicle, but it is not recommended that the driver attempt to view artworks unless the vehicle is at a complete stop. While viewing public artworks from the window of a vehicle is sometimes possible, but it is not always optimal because it allows only for a limited experience and examination of the artwork

PART 1: Artwork in the downtown and southern regions of Scottsdale

  • Park in the Civic Center parking structure at 2nd Street and Wells Fargo Avenue
  • Walk east to the Civic Center

1. Love, Robert Indiana. Sculpture in the Civic Center, just east of the Scottsdale Center for the Arts north doors

2. Scrim Wall, James Carpenter. Glass wall at SMoCA, to be viewed from the Street and inside the Nancy and Art Schwalm Sculpture Garden

3. Knight Rise, James Turrell. Skyspace at SMoCA, to be viewed from inside the Nancy and Art Schwalm Sculpture Garden

  • Drive south on Drinkwater Blvd.
  • Go past Osborn Road, yield left onto Monterray
  • Park curbside where permitted

4. Hummingbird Sanctuary Garden, Kevin Berry. Pocket park at Drinkwater Blvd & Monterey (on East side), just south of Osborn

  • Turn left onto Thomas Road
  • Turn right onto Miller Road
  • Head south about two blocks
  • Park in the public parking lot at Eldorado Boys and Girls Club at the intersection of Oak Street and Miller

5. Floating World, Sylvia Tidwell and Calvin Abe. Three-part installation: boulders, hanging sculptures and pavement decoration at Eldorado Park Aquatic and Fitness Center on the east side of Oak Street and Miller Road.

  • Drive west on Oak Street through the light at Scottsdale Road
  • Park curbside where permitted
 

6. *Tonalea Landmarks, Carolyn Law. Nineteen artist-designed traffic calming devices on Oak Street and Palm Lane between Scottsdale Road and 68th Street.

  • Drive west on Oak Street past 68th Street, to the end of Oak Street where it meets the Crosscut Canal
  • Park curbside where permitted
 

7. Rippling Waters Bridge, Carolyn Law. Pedestrian bridge over the Crosscut Canal at 64th Place.

  • Drive north on 68th Street
  • Turn left, heading west onto Thomas Road
  • Turn right onto 64th Street
  • Drive north, approximately one mile
  • Turn right onto Osborn Road
  • Park curbside where permitted

8. Visual Puzzles, Erik Gonzales. Art is on pedestrian access ramp to bridge that goes over the Crosscut Canal at the Street intersection of Osborn and 64th Street. Curbside parking is available on Osborn just east of 64th Street. The art is located on the pedestrian access ramps and on the bridge: glass fresco and metal screen.

  • Drive east on Osborn Road
  • Turn left onto 68th Street
  • Turn right onto 2nd Street
  • Turn left onto Marshall Way, drive north
  • Park curbside where permitted

9. *Loloma Station and clock tower, Vito Acconci. Transit Station design and clock tower on 2nd Street & Marshall Way (on NW corner)

10. Jack Knife, Ed Mell, intersection of Main Street and Marshall Way

11. Horseshoe Falls, Michael Maglich. Pocket park at Marshall Way & Indian School (SE corner) (fogging element on a timer)

  • Turn left onto Indian School Road, drive north
  • Park curbside where permitted
 

12. Tributary Wall, Kevin Berry. Noise abatement wall on Goldwater Blvd just south of Camelback (on W side)

  • Drive east on Camelback Road
  • Turn left onto Hayden Road, drive north
  • Turn right onto McDonald Drive, drive east
  • Park curbside where permitted or in public parking lot at Agua Linda Park, on the north side of McDonald between Pima Road and 86th Street

13. Lizard Acres, Joe Tyler. Suite of sculptures along the McDonald Drive Streetscape between Pima Road & 86th Street (both sides of Street)

PART 2: Artwork in northern region of Scottsdale

  • Continue driving east on McDonald past Pima Road
  • Get on the Pima Freeway heading north

14. *The Path Most Traveled, Carolyn Braaksma. Bas relief on freeway and neighborhood walls & underpasses of the Pima Freeway (101) between the Via Linda exit and Sweetwater

  • Get off the Pima Freeway at the Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd. exit
  • Turn right, heading east, from the freeway off-ramp onto Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd. Turn left onto Thompson Peak Parkway
  • There is no curbside parking permitted here

15. *Earth Wall/ Living Wall, Joan Baron. Rammed and tile earth noise wall just south of the bridge that goes over the Arizona Canal on the Thompson Peak Parkway just north of Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd.

  • Drive north on Thompson Peak Parkway
  • Turn left onto Bell Road, drive west
  • Turn right onto Pima Road, drive north
  • Turn left onto Hualapai Drive
  • Drive about half a mile, turn left into the visitor parking lot of the Water Campus

16. Water to Water, Paul Edwards & Chris Tanz. Fountain/sculpture at entrance to administration building at Scottsdale Water Campus, Pima Road & Haulapai Drive (one block north of Union Hills, one block east of Pima Road)

  • Drive south on Pima Road
  • Follow signs to get on the Pima Freeway heading south
  • Get off the freeway at the McDonald Drive exit
  • Turn right, heading west, onto McDonald Drive

PART 3: Artwork in downtown Scottsdale

  • Turn left onto Hayden Road, heading south
  • Turn right onto Indian School Road
  • Turn left about one-and-a-half miles down onto 75th Street
  • Head south on 75th Street about a quarter of a mile
  • Park in public parking lots
 

17. Windows to the West, Louise Nevelson. Sculpture in the Civic Center amphitheater

18. Imagination Gives Us Wings, Larry Kirkland. Artwork at the entrance of the Civic Center Library. Park in the parking structure off of 75th Street

19. Pillars of Thought, Mags Harries and Lajos Heder. Artist-designed support pillars in the Civic Center Library. Park in the parking Structure off of 75th Street

20. Scottsdale Justice Center, Jack Mackie. Building facade, benches outside entrance on 75th Street north of Osborn (on W side of Street)

  • Continue driving south on 75th Street
  • Turn right onto Osborn Road
  • Turn right onto Drinkwater Blvd.
  • Turn left onto 2nd Street and you're back at the Civic Center starting location, which is on the right
