Project Description

The City of Scottsdale is developing a streetscape design for Scottsdale Road. The project includes:

Comprehensive streetscape design guidelines for the entire 25-mile length of Scottsdale Road.

Preliminary streetscape design for Scottsdale Road from Roosevelt Street to Earll Drive.

Preliminary streetscape design for Scottsdale Road from Earll Drive to Chaparral Road and a downtown multi-modal circulation study.

Comprehensive streetscape design guidelines for the entire 25-mile length of Scottsdale Road. Overall streetscape design guidelines have been developed for the entire 24-mile length of Scottsdale Road.

The overall purpose of the project is to create an integrated “signature” streetscape design that will enhance the aesthetic of the road, respect neighborhoods, provide opportunities for public art, improve mobility for pedestrian, bicycle, and transit travel, and preserve the opportunity for future high capacity transit, such as the bus rapid transit currently planned in the Valley's regional transportation plan.

The Scottsdale Road Streetscape Design Guidelines project is being led by Otak, Inc in partnership with the City of Scottsdale and the Scottsdale Public Art Program. The design team is comprised of urban designers, landscape architects, planners, civil engineers, traffic engineers, architects, and environmental graphic designers. The design team is working in conjunction with the project team artists, Bob Adams and Buster Simpson, to ensure that art is an integral element of the project.

In addition to the design of streetscape elements and furnishings described and illustrated in the Scottsdale Road Streetscape Guidelines, which have been shaped by the inspiration of the project artists Robert Adams and Buster Simpson, there will be many opportunities in the future for public art and creative expression that can be integrated into the streetscape and corridor improvements along Scottsdale Road.  Public art and creative elements along the corridor will help to define Scottsdale Road as a signature street and enhance its character and identity within the community. An important objective of the Scottsdale Road Streetscape is to enhance conditions for corridor travelers, including pedestrians, transit riders, and bicyclists, and integration of public art will play an important role in making the street more attractive, interesting, distinctive, and memorable.

The artist team is recommending a variety of situations and locations where stand-alone artworks or integrated public art elements would be appropriate.  In general, public artworks should be concentrated in areas where they will receive the highest amount of pedestrian and vehicular interaction.  In addition to suggesting specific locations for art in each district, the team also recommends creating opportunities for art that spans large sections or the entire length of the corridor.
