Overview

Appaloosa Library was part of the City’s Bond-funded 2000 projects and is scheduled to begin construction in 2008. Appaloosa is located on approximately 4.5 acres and will be 25,000 square feet, with amenities including a collection of 100,000 library materials, 40 public computers, wireless internet access, teen and children’s areas, business services, meeting rooms and a coffee and refreshment service.

Located on the southeast corner of Scottsdale and Pinnacle Peak Roads in the Silverstone Development, the geographic area will see much expansion impacting the flow of life and business in the next several years with adjacent projects for mixed-use development and road enhancements.

The project design team includes Jeremy Jones with DWL, Doug Sydnor with Douglas Sydnor Architects, and Brad Goldberg.  With the completion of the design development phase, the Scottsdale Public Art program will oversee site-specific works to enhance the interior of the Library space.

Art Plan
Public art has been integrated into Appaloosa Library in several ways. Site improvements, the architecture, including finishes to the interior were considered during the design development phase by the design team.

The purpose of the approach to the art is to create a visual anchor to the building design, thus building upon the public's experience of the library. The design features include an exterior courtyard, which will provide a shaded space with a simple bosque of native Blue Palo Verdes. In the interior space, a tactile concrete wall offers a link to the exterior desert and geological forms surrounding the building.  A large glass window provides a focal point to the northwest providing considerable light and offering views of the changes in elevation that can be experienced both inside and outside.

The Artist

The Scottsdale Public Art Program is currently selecting additional artwork to enhance the interior of the new library.  Both the project team and the selection panel will review nominated artists for the interior spaces. Artist Brad Goldberg served on the design team in preliminary phases of the project.
