The mission of the Scottsdale Public Art Program is to make Scottsdale one of the most desirable communities in the country in which to live, work and visit by incorporating art and design projects throughout. As a central defining characteristic of our community, public art enhances Scottsdale's unique character, image and identity. Master
Plan for a Strong Future A master plan was completed in February 2004 and public workshops were held at that time to hear citizen interests related to public art for Scottsdale. They are charged with creating art that reflects their individual artistic style and unique vision, but it is also developed with the audience in mind. The public artist sees their job as interpreter. They are accustomed to working with communities — hearing residents’ concerns and doing research —and their art results from a cooperative effort. The artist listens to our stories, histories, issues and concerns and translates them into what’s called “site specific” art, developed specifically for our particular situation. Many partners help inform the
material, location and function. The artist works closely with architects,
landscape architects, engineers and other consultants to develop solutions
